The main sources of brewery wastewater are: malt washing water, malt soaking water, germination cooling spray water, malt trough water, washing water, filtration washing water, sterilization and bottle breaking beer, cooling water and finished product workshop washing water, as well as some domestic sewage. Brewery sewage has the characteristics of high organic matter (COD, BOD), suspended solids (SS), and large pH fluctuations. Its treatment needs to combine physical, chemical, and biological technologies, and reasonably select water purification agents. The following is the core process and supporting agent description organized by Xianhuan Company:
I. Sewage treatment process flow
Pretreatment
Grate filtration: remove large particle impurities such as malt grains and hops.
Regulating tank: balance water quality and water volume, adjust pH to 6-9 (commonly used lime or sulfuric acid).
Primary sedimentation tank: naturally settle suspended solids to reduce subsequent treatment load.
Primary treatment (physical and chemical treatment)
Coagulation sedimentation: add coagulants (such as PAC) and flocculants (PAM) to remove colloids and fine suspended solids through charge neutralization and adsorption bridging.
Flotation process: For oil and fat pollutants, the dissolved air flotation equipment is combined with chemicals to enhance separation.
Secondary treatment (biological treatment)
Activated sludge method/biofilm method: using microorganisms to degrade organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus nutrients (urea, phosphate) need to be supplemented to balance C:N:P≈100:5:1.
UASB (upflow anaerobic sludge bed): suitable for high-concentration organic wastewater, producing biogas through anaerobic reaction and reducing COD.
Deep treatment
Activated carbon adsorption: remove residual color and difficult-to-degrade organic matter.
Disinfection: sodium hypochlorite or ozone oxidation, kill microorganisms and decolorize.
Membrane filtration (optional): further purify recycled water.
II. Key water purification agents and their functions
Coagulant
Polyaluminum chloride (PAC): removes colloids and SS, suitable for a wide pH range (5-9), and the dosage is 50-200mg/L.
Polyferric sulfate (PFS): excellent decolorization effect, suitable for high-color sewage, but the pH needs to be controlled>7 to prevent corrosion.
Aluminum sulfate: low cost, but poor low temperature effect, requires pH adjustment.
Flocculant
Polyacrylamide (PAM): Anionic (molecular weight 8-18 million) is used to neutralize negatively charged colloids. The dosage is 0.1-1 mg/L, which can increase the sedimentation rate by more than 50%.
pH regulator
Lime (Ca(OH)₂): Increase pH and have coagulation effect, but produce large amount of sludge.
Sulfuric acid/hydrochloric acid: Neutralize alkaline sewage to avoid corrosion of equipment.
Nutrient supplement
Urea, diammonium dihydrogen phosphate: Supplement nitrogen and phosphorus required for biological treatment. The dosage ratio is regulated according to COD:N:P=200:5:1.
Decolorizing disinfectant
Sodium hypochlorite (NaClO): Dosage is 10-30 mg/L, which can effectively degrade pigments and disinfect. The residual chlorine needs to be controlled to ≤0.5 mg/L.
Ozone (O₃): Strong oxidizing property, no secondary pollution, but high equipment cost. 3. Key points of agent selection
Synergy: The combination of PAC+PAM can reduce the agent cost by 30%, and the COD removal rate after coagulation reaches 50%-70%.
Adaptability: PFS+sodium hypochlorite is preferred for high-color sewage; polyferric chloride (PFC) is used instead for low-temperature environment.
Economical efficiency: Biological treatment is the main method, and physical and chemical treatment is the auxiliary method to reduce the dependence on agents.
Environmental protection: Avoid the use of agents containing heavy metals, and the sludge needs to be disposed of in compliance after plate and frame filter dehydration (adding PAM).
Summary
The brewery sewage needs to be treated by the combined process of "pretreatment + coagulation sedimentation + biological treatment + deep treatment", combined with PAC, PAM, nutrient salts and other agents, to achieve the discharge standards of COD<100mg/L and SS<70mg/L. Focus on controlling the nutrient balance in the biological treatment stage and the agent addition ratio in the coagulation stage to ensure low-consumption operation.
