Selection and dosing order of coagulants

‌The selection of coagulants in the physical and chemical process of wastewater treatment can be said to play a very important role. Different coagulants are suitable for colloids and suspended solids of different properties and concentrations. In addition, the charge carried by the suspended solids in the wastewater will also affect the selection of coagulants. Regarding the selection of coagulants, when the wastewater is generally in a colloidal state, inorganic coagulants can be added to destabilize it first. In practical applications, people will use polymer coagulants in combination with inorganic coagulants to improve the coagulation effect and reduce costs.

1. Dosage of coagulant:

In addition to the type of coagulant, its dosage is also a major influencing factor. The dosage of coagulant required in wastewater is determined through relevant experiments. It is closely related to the water quality of wastewater, its own type, dosage method and medium conditions. Its dosage should not be too little or too much. From the experience of dosage, the traditional iron salts (such as polyferric sulfate or ferrous sulfate) and aluminum salts (such as polyaluminum chloride) are 10-30 mg/L, the polymer is half or one-third of it, and the organic ion molecules are 1-5 mg/L.

2. Order of coagulant addition:

If multiple coagulants need to be added during coagulation treatment, the order of their addition will also affect their application effect. The normal rule is to add inorganic salts such as polyferric sulfate and then organic salts. For example, when using ferrous sulfate and lime reagents, ferrous sulfate should be added first and then lime. At this time, the filtration speed is fast and the reagents are saved. When high molecular coagulants and coagulants are used together, the coagulant should generally be added first. However, if the colloidal particles are above 50 microns, organic coagulants should be used for adsorption and bridging treatment first, and then inorganic coagulants should be used for compression and destabilization treatment.

In addition to the coagulant factors mentioned above, it is also affected by the quality of wastewater, including water temperature, pH value, water composition and properties, concentration, etc. By taking water samples for experiments, we can better determine the reagents in the wastewater and their dosage and addition method to achieve better coagulation effect.
